  18. THE LEONE LEGACY - PART TWO - "IN A RUSH TO GROW UP" by Michael

  26.     "Commodore, I don't see why I have to be the one to take on a 
  27. crew of rookies.  Surely, there are better suited teachers-"
  28.     Commodore Peter Fox smiled.  "Better suited, of course.  But 
  29. there are none as experienced as you, Captain."
  30.     Todd James, commanding officer of the USS Excelsior, 
  31. NCC-2000-A, paced around the commodore's office.  "Experienced? 
  32.  I give Starfleet the best years of my life, and I get to 
  33. baby-sit a bunch of kids?"
  34.     "These are not kids, Captain.  These trainees are amongst the 
  35. highest ranking cadets at Starfleet Academy."
  36.     James still was not convinced.  "They're kids!  I would rather 
  37. take on a bunch of chimpanzees!"
  38.     Fox's smile grew a little.  "That could be arranged, Mr. 
  39. James."
  40.     James pretended not to hear him.  "Will I be able to retain 
  41. any of my senior staff?"
  42.     "No."
  43.     "No?!"
  44.     "Did you not hear me, Captain?"
  45.     "Not even my own first officer?"
  46.     "All cadets, Captain.  It's part of the learning experience.  
  47. After six weeks, your normal compliment will return to their 
  48. duty stations."
  49.     "Six weeks!"
  50.     "When was the last time you visited the doctor, Captain?  Your 
  51. ears are failing you."
  52.     "I don't find this amusing, sir."
  53.     Commodore Fox rose from his seat. "Well, you had better start 
  54. liking it, Captain.  Admiral Brand has already made the 
  55. assignments final.  There's nothing you can do about it.  Take 
  56. the Excelsior to Pacifica to offload the bulk of your crew.  
  57. The rest can help run the ship to Earth and then disembark 
  58. there."
  59.     "What if my entire crew wishes to disembark at Pacifica, sir?"
  60.     "Have your chief engineer automate the ship by voice until you 
  61. reach Terra.  It's only a two-hour cruise from Pacifica, 
  62. Captain."
  63.     James was now looking out the office viewport at his ship.  "I 
  64. don't suppose there is any chance of you accepting my 
  65. resignation from Starfleet."
  66.     Fox chuckled, "Relax, Captain.  If this goes well, Admiral 
  67. Brand might extend it by four weeks."
  68.     Captain Todd James leaned forward against the viewport and 
  69. began to thud his head on it.

  72.     Commander Aareel Elanniss walked the bridge of the Excelsior 
  73. ........ twice.  She knew the meeting with Commodore Fox was 
  74. taking longer than usual.  After a while, Elanniss (known as 
  75. 'Elaine' to her friends) sat down in the center seat and called 
  76. out to ops, "Mr. Perez, at warp five, how long would it take us 
  77. to get to Pacifica from here?"
  78.     "Approximately three hours, sixteen minutes, Commander," 
  79. replied Lieutenant Commander Luiz Perez, second officer.
  80.     Elaine began to drum her finger against the armrests.  
  81. "Computer, location of Captain James?"
  82.     "Captain Todd James is currently in turboshaft one en route to 
  83. the bridge."
  84.     She stood up in anticipation of the captain's arrival.  James 
  85. arrived on the bridge just long enough to mutter a few orders 
  86. to depart and ask Elaine to join him in the conference lounge.
  87.     When everything was in place, the Excelsior's most senior 
  88. officers met in the conference lounge.
  89.     James filled her in on the situation and when he finished, 
  90. Elaine threw her head back and laughed.
  91.     Captain James scowled.  "I do not find this situation funny at 
  92. all, Commander."
  93.     Elaine continued to chuckle, "Of course it is, sir.  
  94. Baby-sitting is not one of your strong suits."
  95.     Todd smiled a little.  "You will have to disembark as well, 
  96. Elaine."
  97.     She stopped at this. "What?  I thought I was going to be there 
  98. to help ........ and poke some fun."
  99.     "Then I hope you will enjoy your stay at Pacifica."

  102.     As the USS Excelsior slid into orbit around the planet 
  103. Pacifica, its crew was packing for their six week vacation on 
  104. the oceanic world.  It's first officer, however, was not happy 
  105. about it.
  106.     "Sir, I respectfully request permission to remain aboard 
  107. ship."
  108.     "Permission denied, Number One.  Admiral Brand was quite 
  109. specific in ordering all crew be on leave for the next six 
  110. weeks except the captain."
  111.     Elaine looked around at the bridge.  "Good luck, Captain.  See 
  112. you in six weeks."
  113.     "Have fun.  Bring me a souvenir," replied Captain James.
  114.     She nodded and tapped her communicator.  "Computer, one to 
  115. beam down.  Energize."
  116.     When Elanniss had completed transport, James walked his bridge 
  117. once and called out.  "Computer, recognize James, Captain Todd 
  118. R."
  119.     "Voiceprint verified for Captain Todd James.  Computer control 
  120. standing by."
  121.     "Localize command functions to the bridge and go to complete 
  122. automation of the Excelsior."
  123.     "Please enter authorization code."
  124.     "Authorization James, alpha, two, two, eight, omega."
  125.     "Access approved.  Computer standing by."
  126.     James sighed.  "Plot course for Terra at warp five."
  127.     "Course plotted."
  128.     "Execute."
  129.     "Executing..... now en route to Terra.  Estimated time of 
  130. arrival two hours, thirty-five minutes."
  131.     He sat back down into his seat and looked around at the empty 
  132. bridge.  I have a bad feeling about this, he thought.

  188. THE LEONE LEGACY - PART TWO - “IN A RUSH TO GROW UP” by Michael

  197.     Cadet First Class Dominic Leone had finished packing his 
  198. personal effects for the voyage on the Excelsior.  As he was 
  199. heading out of the door, his communicator sounded.  He tapped 
  200. it, “Leone, here.”
  201.     “This is Commander Selak.  Please report to my office 
  202. immediately.”
  203.     Alarmed, but calm, he responded, “Aye, Commander.  I’m on my 
  204. way.”
  205.     What in the devil would Selak want with me?, thought Dominic.  
  206. He had received his assignment on the Excelsior two days ago 
  207. along with the other eight hundred or so cadets in his class 
  208. and the following class, and was excited about it as they were. 
  209.  Dominic was now fearful of being denied of that assignment 
  210. because of his last prank on his classmates.  He reprogrammed 
  211. the computer to only replicate Klingon gagh at any request for 
  212. food from any cadet, making the sole Klingon cadet absolutely 
  213. ecstatic.  His immediate superior was not pleased with the fact 
  214. that he couldn’t get a decent egg salad sandwich from any one 
  215. of the replicators on campus.  
  216.     Leone walked into Selak’s office and sat down at the Vulcan’s 
  217. gesture.
  218.     “Cadet Dominic Leone reporting as ordered, sir.”
  219.     “Cadet, the Excelsior will be arriving shortly, and unlike the 
  220. other cadets, your assigned position aboard that ship will be 
  221. given to you right now.”
  222.     Dominic thought to himself, Great.  One prank and I’m assigned 
  223. as the ship’s janitor.
  224.     “You will be assigned as the ship’s first officer.”
  225.     Leone’s eyes widened.  “E-Excuse me, sir?  Did I hear you 
  226. correctly?”
  227.     “First Officer.  Cadet, you will be responsible for the ship 
  228. as much as the captain is.  I hope you will not take that 
  229. responsibility lightly, Mr. Leone.”
  230.     Cadet Leone coughed, “No, sir.  I won’t, sir.”
  231.     Selak eyed him with scrutiny.  “Very well.  Admiral Brand has 
  232. requested that you beam aboard ship at fourteen hundred.  You 
  233. will have two hours to familiarize yourself with the ship 
  234. before the rest of the crew beams aboard at sixteen hundred.  
  235. Do you understand, Cadet?”
  236.     “Aye, sir.”
  237.     “After sixteen hundred, you will assume the temporary rank of 
  238. Commander.  That will be all, Cadet.  You are dismissed.”
  239.     “Aye, sir.”
  240.

  242.     “Computer, enter into synchronous orbit above Starfleet 
  243. Academy, San Francisco campus.”
  244.     “Altering course accordingly.”
  245.     Captain James looked out the viewscreen at Earth.  
  246.     “Incoming communication, Captain.  Originating from Starfleet 
  247. Academy, Admiral Brand’s office.”
  248.     “Onscreen.”
  249.     The screen flashed the insignia of Starfleet Academy, and then 
  250. shifted to Admiral Brand.  “Hope you had a pleasant trip, 
  251. Captain.”
  252.     “As pleasant as any automated trip could be, Admiral.”
  253.     Brand frowned.  “Commodore Fox tells me you weren’t happy 
  254. about this assignment, Mr. James, but like all other 
  255. assignments, this one is as important.”
  256.     “Yes, sir.  I understand.  I would like the crew manifest as 
  257. soon as possible, sir.”
  258.     “Contact Commander Selak for any or all information regarding 
  259. this mission.  Bon voyage, Captain.  Brand, out.”
  260.     “Humph.  Old hag.  Computer, contact Starfleet Academy, 
  261. Commander Selak’s office and download crew manifest.  Filter 
  262. information and prepare a report starting with first officer.”
  263.     “Working .... information downloaded, report standing by.”
  264.     James sat down at the operations console.  “At ops, please.”
  265.     
  266.  
  267.     The chronometer on the concourse wall read fifteen fifty-nine 
  268. hundred.  Leone was becoming agitated.  He tapped his 
  269. communicator, “Excelsior, this is Cad-, er, Commander Leone.  
  270. One to beam up.”
  271.     “This is Captain James, stand by.”
  272.     Dominic held his breath, then let it out slowly.  “Aye, sir.”
  273.     Meanwhile, James was making final arrangements.  
  274.     
  275.  
  276.     “Computer, prepare to initiate drills staggered to these 
  277. specifications,” said James, entering in times and dates into 
  278. his terminal.  “Initial announcement to take place at sixteen 
  279. thirty hours aboard ship: Full crew meeting on recreation deck 
  280. at one-seven-one-five hundred hours.”  Captain James wasn’t 
  281. looking forward to that meeting.  Nor meeting his “first 
  282. officer.”
  283.     “Computer, lock onto Cadet Leone’s signal and transport him 
  284. directly to the bridge.”
  285.     “Energizing,” replied the computer.
  286.     James heard the transporter’s hum and did not turn around to 
  287. face his new first officer.  “Welcome aboard, Commander Leone.  
  288. I’m Captain Todd James,” he said holding out some isolinear 
  289. optical chips.  “Take these with you and study them.  They 
  290. contain all the information you will need to know as ship’s 
  291. first officer.  You will have one hour to familiarize yourself 
  292. with the Excelsior.  Meet me in the forward observation lounge 
  293. at fifteen hundred hours.  After our meeting, you will be 
  294. responsible for the placement and posting of the crew roster.”  
  295. At this, James turned to face Leone.  “I hope you will enjoy 
  296. your tenure aboard the Excelsior.”
