THE LEONE LEGACY - PART TWO - "IN A RUSH TO GROW UP" by Michael
D. Garcia
Prologue
"Commodore, I don't see why I have to be the one to take on a
crew of rookies. Surely, there are better suited teachers-"
Commodore Peter Fox smiled. "Better suited, of course. But
there are none as experienced as you, Captain."
Todd James, commanding officer of the USS Excelsior,
NCC-2000-A, paced around the commodore's office. "Experienced?
I give Starfleet the best years of my life, and I get to
baby-sit a bunch of kids?"
"These are not kids, Captain. These trainees are amongst the
highest ranking cadets at Starfleet Academy."
James still was not convinced. "They're kids! I would rather
take on a bunch of chimpanzees!"
Fox's smile grew a little. "That could be arranged, Mr.
James."
James pretended not to hear him. "Will I be able to retain
any of my senior staff?"
"No."
"No?!"
"Did you not hear me, Captain?"
"Not even my own first officer?"
"All cadets, Captain. It's part of the learning experience.
After six weeks, your normal compliment will return to their
duty stations."
"Six weeks!"
"When was the last time you visited the doctor, Captain? Your
ears are failing you."
"I don't find this amusing, sir."
Commodore Fox rose from his seat. "Well, you had better start
liking it, Captain. Admiral Brand has already made the
assignments final. There's nothing you can do about it. Take
the Excelsior to Pacifica to offload the bulk of your crew.
The rest can help run the ship to Earth and then disembark
there."
"What if my entire crew wishes to disembark at Pacifica, sir?"
"Have your chief engineer automate the ship by voice until you
reach Terra. It's only a two-hour cruise from Pacifica,
Captain."
James was now looking out the office viewport at his ship. "I
don't suppose there is any chance of you accepting my
resignation from Starfleet."
Fox chuckled, "Relax, Captain. If this goes well, Admiral
Brand might extend it by four weeks."
Captain Todd James leaned forward against the viewport and
began to thud his head on it.
Commander Aareel Elanniss walked the bridge of the Excelsior
........ twice. She knew the meeting with Commodore Fox was
taking longer than usual. After a while, Elanniss (known as
'Elaine' to her friends) sat down in the center seat and called
out to ops, "Mr. Perez, at warp five, how long would it take us
to get to Pacifica from here?"
"Approximately three hours, sixteen minutes, Commander,"
replied Lieutenant Commander Luiz Perez, second officer.
Elaine began to drum her finger against the armrests.
"Computer, location of Captain James?"
"Captain Todd James is currently in turboshaft one en route to
the bridge."
She stood up in anticipation of the captain's arrival. James
arrived on the bridge just long enough to mutter a few orders
to depart and ask Elaine to join him in the conference lounge.
When everything was in place, the Excelsior's most senior
officers met in the conference lounge.
James filled her in on the situation and when he finished,
Elaine threw her head back and laughed.
Captain James scowled. "I do not find this situation funny at
all, Commander."
Elaine continued to chuckle, "Of course it is, sir.
Baby-sitting is not one of your strong suits."
Todd smiled a little. "You will have to disembark as well,
Elaine."
She stopped at this. "What? I thought I was going to be there
to help ........ and poke some fun."
"Then I hope you will enjoy your stay at Pacifica."
As the USS Excelsior slid into orbit around the planet
Pacifica, its crew was packing for their six week vacation on
the oceanic world. It's first officer, however, was not happy
about it.
"Sir, I respectfully request permission to remain aboard
ship."
"Permission denied, Number One. Admiral Brand was quite
specific in ordering all crew be on leave for the next six
weeks except the captain."
Elaine looked around at the bridge. "Good luck, Captain. See
you in six weeks."
"Have fun. Bring me a souvenir," replied Captain James.
She nodded and tapped her communicator. "Computer, one to
beam down. Energize."
When Elanniss had completed transport, James walked his bridge
once and called out. "Computer, recognize James, Captain Todd
R."
"Voiceprint verified for Captain Todd James. Computer control
standing by."
"Localize command functions to the bridge and go to complete
automation of the Excelsior."
"Please enter authorization code."
"Authorization James, alpha, two, two, eight, omega."
"Access approved. Computer standing by."
James sighed. "Plot course for Terra at warp five."
"Course plotted."
"Execute."
"Executing..... now en route to Terra. Estimated time of
arrival two hours, thirty-five minutes."
He sat back down into his seat and looked around at the empty
bridge. I have a bad feeling about this, he thought.

THE LEONE LEGACY - PART TWO - IN A RUSH TO GROW UP by Michael
D. Garcia
Chapter One
Cadet First Class Dominic Leone had finished packing his
personal effects for the voyage on the Excelsior. As he was
heading out of the door, his communicator sounded. He tapped
it, Leone, here.
This is Commander Selak. Please report to my office
immediately.
Alarmed, but calm, he responded, Aye, Commander. Im on my
way.
What in the devil would Selak want with me?, thought Dominic.
He had received his assignment on the Excelsior two days ago
along with the other eight hundred or so cadets in his class
and the following class, and was excited about it as they were.
Dominic was now fearful of being denied of that assignment
because of his last prank on his classmates. He reprogrammed
the computer to only replicate Klingon gagh at any request for
food from any cadet, making the sole Klingon cadet absolutely
ecstatic. His immediate superior was not pleased with the fact
that he couldnt get a decent egg salad sandwich from any one
of the replicators on campus.
Leone walked into Selaks office and sat down at the Vulcans
gesture.
Cadet Dominic Leone reporting as ordered, sir.
Cadet, the Excelsior will be arriving shortly, and unlike the
other cadets, your assigned position aboard that ship will be
given to you right now.
Dominic thought to himself, Great. One prank and Im assigned
as the ships janitor.
You will be assigned as the ships first officer.
Leones eyes widened. E-Excuse me, sir? Did I hear you
correctly?
First Officer. Cadet, you will be responsible for the ship
as much as the captain is. I hope you will not take that
responsibility lightly, Mr. Leone.
Cadet Leone coughed, No, sir. I wont, sir.
Selak eyed him with scrutiny. Very well. Admiral Brand has
requested that you beam aboard ship at fourteen hundred. You
will have two hours to familiarize yourself with the ship
before the rest of the crew beams aboard at sixteen hundred.
Do you understand, Cadet?
Aye, sir.
After sixteen hundred, you will assume the temporary rank of
Commander. That will be all, Cadet. You are dismissed.
Aye, sir.
Computer, enter into synchronous orbit above Starfleet
Academy, San Francisco campus.
Altering course accordingly.
Captain James looked out the viewscreen at Earth.
Incoming communication, Captain. Originating from Starfleet
Academy, Admiral Brands office.
Onscreen.
The screen flashed the insignia of Starfleet Academy, and then
shifted to Admiral Brand. Hope you had a pleasant trip,
Captain.
As pleasant as any automated trip could be, Admiral.
Brand frowned. Commodore Fox tells me you werent happy
about this assignment, Mr. James, but like all other
assignments, this one is as important.
Yes, sir. I understand. I would like the crew manifest as
soon as possible, sir.
Contact Commander Selak for any or all information regarding
this mission. Bon voyage, Captain. Brand, out.
Humph. Old hag. Computer, contact Starfleet Academy,
Commander Selaks office and download crew manifest. Filter
information and prepare a report starting with first officer.
Working .... information downloaded, report standing by.
James sat down at the operations console. At ops, please.
The chronometer on the concourse wall read fifteen fifty-nine
hundred. Leone was becoming agitated. He tapped his
communicator, Excelsior, this is Cad-, er, Commander Leone.
One to beam up.
This is Captain James, stand by.
Dominic held his breath, then let it out slowly. Aye, sir.
Meanwhile, James was making final arrangements.
Computer, prepare to initiate drills staggered to these
specifications, said James, entering in times and dates into
his terminal. Initial announcement to take place at sixteen
thirty hours aboard ship: Full crew meeting on recreation deck
at one-seven-one-five hundred hours. Captain James wasnt
looking forward to that meeting. Nor meeting his first
officer.
Computer, lock onto Cadet Leones signal and transport him
directly to the bridge.
Energizing, replied the computer.
James heard the transporters hum and did not turn around to
face his new first officer. Welcome aboard, Commander Leone.
Im Captain Todd James, he said holding out some isolinear
optical chips. Take these with you and study them. They
contain all the information you will need to know as ships
first officer. You will have one hour to familiarize yourself
with the Excelsior. Meet me in the forward observation lounge
at fifteen hundred hours. After our meeting, you will be
responsible for the placement and posting of the crew roster.
At this, James turned to face Leone. I hope you will enjoy
your tenure aboard the Excelsior.
